SUMMARY:Alfie Zappacosta
DESCRIPTION:The Carleton is delighted to again (it’s becoming an annual thing!) welcome 2-time Juno award winner and Canadian icon Alfie Zappacosta back to our stage for two performances – accompanied by Silvio Pupo \nAlfie Zappacosta is undeniably one of Canada’s premier songwriters and performers with chart topping hits and a recording and acting career that has spanned 40 years. He continues to evolve as an artist by “doing it his way”\, an effort that has been rewarded with an impressive song catalogue and a discerning loyal fan base. \n\n\n\n\n\nAlfie Zappacosta decided on a music career in his teens and set his sights upon being a guitarist. When his vocal dexterity and song writing proficiency were uncovered by a publisher while writing for his first original band “Surrender”\, events would be put in motion to champion Zappacosta (dropping his first name) as a solo artist and bring him to the world’s attention. “Start Again”\, “Passion”\, “When I Fall in Love Again” and “Nothing Can Stand In Your Way” became staples on Canadian adult contemporary radio and Zappacosta became a personified Rock Star. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 1987\, Walt Disney’s Danger Bay would bring Zappacosta an episode written specifically for him titled “Rock Star”. In the same year\, he penned and sang “Overload” exclusively for the multi-platinum soundtrack “Dirty Dancing” and Loverboy would record Zappacosta’s “That’s Where The Money Goes” for their Wildside album. In 1988\, he was awarded JUNOs for “Album of The Year’ and “Most Promising Artist”\, an American Music Award for “Most Popular Album of The Year” and named the Canadian Publishers Music Association’s “Best Rock Star”. \n\n\n\n\n\nZappacosta’s distinctive baritone voice did not go unnoticed by artistic directors and in 1990\, he was called to deliver his greatest challenge of his career – singing Andrew Lloyd Webber. Alfie’s portrayals of Christ in Jesus Christ Superstar and Che Guevara in Evita would bring a new audience and support his efforts to delineate his pop/rock image – a moniker that never reflected his authentic personality. The release of “Innocence Ballet” in 1996 would introduce Alfie Zappacosta (taking back his first name) and give center stage to his true rich vocals\, his mastery at romance\, his astute take on relationships and his advanced knowledge of music. Alfie is rewarded for his efforts with numerous award nominations in the Smooth Jazz genre and a performance with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra in 2005. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZappacosta has polished his live concert performances exposing his sophisticated\, intimate and intense personality. His performances deliver a blend of acoustic\, jazz and pop music prompting the listener to engage soulfully.  And the hits that originally brought Zappacosta to the world’s attention? – Alfie hasn’t turned his back on any of these songs. You will hear them in his program performed the way they were originally written and meant to be heard. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets

SUMMARY:Ty Messick & Friends
DESCRIPTION:One of our most under-rated songwriters and performers\, Ty Messick\, with friends including Pictou County singing legend Virgil Muir\, will return to The Carleton for their first show of 2026 on Saturday\, January 24th. Show time is 8 PM and tickets are only $10 + HST. \nTheir sets will include Ty’s original music from his album releases as well as covering some wicked tunes. We’ll have standing room for this show\, so to secure a seat\, get there early! \nTy Messsick was born in Philadelphia\, P.A  in 1979\, soaked up a lifetime of Philly K-Rock and campus WXPN radio and then moved to St. Margaret’s Bay\, Nova Scotia\, at 13 years old. At 19\, Tyler encountered Joel Plaskett playing Down at the Khyber in Hell’s Kitchen and was given a roadmap to East Coast rock ‘n roll. Tyler is also known by his stage name\, Museum Pieces. \nHis original songwriting became public knowledge in 2003\, when his first album\, Grain Sales of 1840was nominated for an ECMA. He has since released 6 full length albums including: Philadelphia (2005)\, Plain Sight (2018) and Sun’s Gonna Rise (2023). \nHis sound is a mix of Rock and Traditional – and his recordings often draw comparisons to other Philadelphia-born bands Kurt Vile\, and War on Drugs. Messick spent many years collaborating with notable Island and Scotian acts such as Al Tuck\, Joel Plaskett\, Matt Mays\, Jill Barber\, Rose Cousins… and the list goes on. More recently Messick has toured with the Big Turnips artists roster\, and worked with Absolute Losers\, Two Hours Traffic\, and Gizmo – the new PEI pop rock bands. \n“Tyler’s songs make rain slow down a little bit and flowers blossom a little harder. Every song makes me sigh and high with relief. Hands down my favourite band.” Matt Mays \n“This band tends to have a way with melody that most people work so very hard to acquire.” – Chris Wibbs for Exclaim! Magazine \n“stately folk pop” – Magnet Magazine \n“Tyler Messick fills the number with boundless soul\, as if it’s the culmination of an epic\, troubled love story. There’s enough heart here to represent a young man’s whole lifetime\, the better and the worse\, and enough guitar\, too. He sounds as if he grew up with these chords\, just waiting for the chance. And he kills it.”  – Sean Michaels\, Said the Gramaphone From the Globe and Mail \nTyler Messick “Grain Sales of 1840 (expanded version) 2002 on Spotify \nMuseum Pieces “Philadelphia” album on Spotify \nMuseum Pieces “Plain Sight” on Spotify \nTyler Messick “Suns Gonna Rise” album 2023 \nTickets

SUMMARY:Ariana Nasr & Curtis Thorpe
DESCRIPTION:Ariana is a versatile singer and multi-instrumentalist\, dedicated to sharing her love of music through live performance. With a voice that transports listeners to another era\, she has been delighting audiences for many years with her diverse musical offerings\, spanning many styles and languages. \nAriana’s musical journey began in early childhood\, encouraged by her mother\, a music teacher and her family’s love of music. She studied various instruments\, including violin\, saxophone\, clarinet\, and piano\, and performed in multiple wind ensembles and jazz bands in her native Nova Scotia. After high school\, she discovered her passion for singing and became an independent artist\, performing and writing music with her then-partner Andy Flinn for over a decade. During this period Ariana produced eleven CDs and contributed to numerous recordings for other artists. \nHer musical path took a new turn when she fell in love with French chanson\, leading her to create a tribute show to the legendary Édith Piaf in 2015. The show\, which paid homage to Piaf’s legacy and the classic concert style of the 1900s\, captured the interest of her Canadian public and enjoyed many performances around the country. Ariana then expanded the show to include the works of Jacques Brel\, adopting the dress codes and personas of both artists to create an immersive experience. \nIn 2016 Ariana and her sisters Sahara and Kamila Nasr and brother-in-law Ken Shorley\, founded the ASHK ensemble. This family project showcases the poetic works of their late father Amin Nasr\, a Sufi poet from Afghanistan\, and the group’s unique musical fusion which reflects their diverse cultural background and influences. \n2016 also saw the formation of her duo with Curtis Thorpe\, a project fueled by a love of improvisation\, of musical arrangement and multi-instrumentalism; Curtis plays guitar\, percussion and harmonica simultaneously while Ariana sings and takes liberties with her soprano saxophone and sometimes accordion or violin. The duo delights in making new arrangements of French\, international\, and jazz songs. \nIn 2023\, Ariana made her solo debut at the Carrefour Mondial de l’Accordéon in Montmagny\, Quebec\, performing her interpretations of classic popular songs from around the world\, accompanying herself on chromatic button accordion. \nAriana has been based in Montréal since 2017 and continues to tour as a solo artist\, in duo with Curtis Thorpe\, and as a member of ASHK ensemble.

SUMMARY:Brookside & Bowskill
DESCRIPTION:Brooks & Bowskill is the collaboration of Canadian wife-and-husband musicians Brittany Brooks and Jimmy Bowskill. Their genre-bending sound journeys between folk\, country-rock\, pop and rock and roll. \nJim Bowskill\, a multi-talented instrumentalist\, songwriter\, producer and recording engineer has established himself as one of the most profound musicians and music producers in the industry. He is a member of Canadian country-rock band Blue Rodeo\, as their multi-instrumentalist and previously spent 7 years as lead guitarist of Canadian rock band The Sheepdogs. \nSince the beginning of her musical career\, BrittanyBrooks has been a prolific songwriter\, singer and instrumentalist\, crafting lyrically evocative songs steeped in wisdom beyond her years. She has become notable for her unique and poignant vocal styling reminiscent of female folk-rock pioneers from the ‘60s like Sandy Denny\, Joni Mitchell and country artists like Emmylou Harris and Sylvia Tyson. In addition to releasing multiple solo albums\, Brooks has provided background vocals on records and in live performances for numerous bands including Blue Rodeo. \nTheir debut long-play album Too Many Roads (released Jan. 2023) gained critical acclaim for the couple’s versatile songwriting\, expert musicianship and undeniable chemistry as musical collaborators. A lot has changed since the debut record from the duo. First\, they got married\, making official the deep connection between the pair that was so clear in the songs of that first LP. They also moved their studio\, Ganaraska Recording Co\, from a former Ontario Hydro building in an industrial part of Cobourg\, Ontario to a nearly 200-year-old farmhouse in the Northumberland Hills. Lastly\, they introduced themselves and their songs to live audiences across southern Ontario. The shows garnered rave reviews from concert goers in small community halls\, downtown rock bars\, and stately\, storied theatres. Every stage\, no matter what size\, became a place for Brooks and Bowskill\, along with their band the Hometown Beauts\, to show their love for live performance\, for their new songs and treasured covers\, for their audience and for each other. \nNow Brooks and Bowskill present their second long playing album\, Blissful State of Mind\, a record of the last two years for the band. It is the sound of the marriage of two old souled songwriters\, merging their histories together and imbuing each other with confidence. It is the sound of the rolling hills north of Cobourg\, and an old farmhouse resurrected and filled with life again. It’s also the sound of a band of musicians who have played together long enough to be able to anticipate each other’s next moves. In sum\, Blissful State of Mind is the sound of a group at home\, for a moment\, in the moment.

SUMMARY:The Magpies
DESCRIPTION:Transatlantic folk band The Magpies are quickly becoming one of the most exciting and innovative acts on the contemporary roots scene. Combining sublime harmonies with exquisite musicianship and impressive songwriting\, The Magpies traverse Anglo and American roots\, drawing inspiration from traditional Celtic folk\, bluegrass and Appalachian trails\, to create an effortless melting pot of music. \nAccomplished musicians in their own right\, founding members Bella Gaffney (award winning singer-songwriter\, guitarist and banjoist) and Holly Brandon (acclaimed fiddle player and tunesmith) perform alongside gifted singer-songwriter and guitarist Ellie Gowers. These talented young musicians work collaboratively to create their fresh brand of transatlantic folk and champion gender equality in the music industry\, with a fervent thread of feminism running through their music. \nIn their live performances\, The Magpies have been exceptionally well-received\, touring extensively throughout the UK\, with festival highlights including Glastonbury\, Cambridge\, Larmer Tree\, Shambala\, Towersey and Deer Shed and international performances in USA\, Canada\, Ireland\, Portugal and Luxembourg. Their live shows are known for their high energy and wry delivery\, transporting audiences to distant lands with ethereal voices and glistening instrumentals. \n\nWith more than a decade of making records and touring around the world behind them—as members of the award-winning group Còig—Rachel Davis & Darren McMullen now have their sights set on something new—Home. \nRecorded with award-winning songwriter\, musician\, and producer Dave Gunning\, Home is Rachel and Darren’s long-imagined\, and much-anticipated\, duo album. Highlighting the pair’s outstanding musicianship and vocals\, Home mixes traditional tunes and songs with original co-writes and signature classics. \nRachel and Darren are well-established and respected instrumentalists in the traditional music world and their playing on this album certainly lives up to that reputation. From the gentle but commanding riff that opens River and the Road\, written by Scottish songwriting royalty Archie Fisher\, to the unexpectedly bouncy breath of fresh air that is Laurence Gowan’s 1993 hit Dancing on My Own Ground\, to an old standby from their live sets\, We Remember You Well by their pal\, Cape Breton Music Hall of Fame writer Buddy MacDonald\, the songs on Home couldn’t be a better fit for Rachel and Darren’s voices and musical sensibilities. \nThe pair also wanted to do more songwriting for this album and they hit the jackpot with recording\, engineering\, and arranging collaborator Dave Gunning and acclaimed singer-songwriter Terra Spencer. Both Gunning and Spencer add harmony vocals to the songs they co-wrote\, with Gunning also playing a variety of instruments on the album. Other musical guests include Margie Beaton (piano)\, Thierry Clouette (bouzouki\, foot percussion)\, and Zakk Cormier (guitar\, foot percussion) taking turns on the tunes\, and English folk singer Jackie Oates who joins Rachel and Darren on harmony for the lovely Cornish folk song Sweet Nightingale\, which closes the album. \nListening to Rachel and Darren\, it’s obvious that they’ve been playing together for a while—not just as part of Còig\, but also as a duo\, as guests on each other’s records\, and as part of bigger stage productions and ensembles. There’s an easy way about them\, a sense of comfort that comes through in the music\, in the mix of their instruments\, the blending of their voices\, and how the arrangements leave room for each other. They seem to know just when to lay back and when it’s time to “give’er”.
