SUMMARY:Natalie Alcorn\, Richard White & Jennifer King
DESCRIPTION:Horn player and vocalist Natalie Alcorn joins jazz guitarist Richard White and pianist and series host Jennifer King for a program that brings classical repertoire into conversation with jazz standards and contemporary works. \nRobert Schumann’s “Adagio and Allegro\,” Op. 70 shows off the horn’s full range\, moving from spacious\, lyric writing into quicksilver passagework that is a conversation with the piano. Franz Strauss’s “Notturno\,” Op. 7 leans into a more intimate mood\, with long melodic arcs and a warm\, late-Romantic glow. Hoagy Carmichael’s “The Nearness of You” offers the kind of close\, unhurried phrasing that suits the mellow combination of voice and electric guitar. Bobby Troup’s “Route 66” brings a light\, forward-moving swing\, and Billie Eilish’s “My Future\,” heard here in a jazz arrangement\, shifts the song into a new frame. Fred Rogers’ “It’s You I Like” adds a moment of simple sincerity\, with the kind of direct message that lands differently when it’s sung in a room with other people. Presented in a sensory-friendly environment\, this concert offers a relaxed\, welcoming space to listen\, settle in\, and experience live music at your own pace. \nNatalie Alcorn is known for her versatility as both a horn player and vocalist\, with classical training from McGill University\, she also holds a Masters of Music from the New England Conservatory. She is a member of the Stadacona Band\, has performed across Canada and internationally\, and can often be found playing in the horn section of Symphony Nova Scotia. She has also performed with the Boston Philharmonic\, Ottawa Symphony\, Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra\, Montreal’s Altsys Jazz Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Richard White is a Canadian guitarist who works across jazz standards\, pop\, and original music\, with a background in theatre and vocal performance. Jennifer King is a CBC-featured pianist whose recording “O Mistress Moon: Canadian Edition” won Classical Album of the Year at the 2023 East Coast Music Awards\, and whose latest album “Souvenance” is nominated for two 2026 East Coast Music Awards. \n\n\nThe Sensory-Accessible Concerts series is made possible through the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts\, the J&W Murphy Foundation\, the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia\, the Harrison McCain Foundation\, the Craig Foundation\, the Unity for Autism Foundation\, the Cecilia Concerts Season Sponsor Nice Moves / Red Door Realty\, and our presenting partner the Halifax Public Libraries. We appreciate the gifts from the many individual donors who continue to support this important initiative.

SUMMARY:Music of ABBA
DESCRIPTION:Our first Sensory-Accessible Concerts program of the new year offers a fresh take on the music of Swedish supergroup ABBA\, as members of OperAtlantic blend classical artistry with the pulse of pop. Sopranos Suzanne Rigden and Elizabeth Humphries\, tenor Glen Nowell\, and bass Kurt Sampson join pianist Tara Scott to reimagine familiar songs with warmth and vitality\, revealing the emotion and storytelling that make ABBA’s music so timeless. The program moves through some of ABBA’s biggest hits in unexpected and expressive ways. “Take a Chance on Me” bursts with playful momentum\, while “Chiquitita” unfolds with tenderness and quiet resilience. “Super Trouper” carries an undercurrent of determination\, its brightness edged with strength\, and “Knowing Me\, Knowing You” lingers on moments of honesty and change. In “The Winner Takes It All\,”emotion and poise intertwine\, and “Thank You for the Music” becomes a joyful nod to creativity and connection. “Happy New Year” balances reflection with hope\, and “Dancing Queen\,” always an audience favourite\, fills the space with rhythm\, warmth\, and an energy that’s impossible to resist. \n\n\nHosted by pianist Jennifer King and co-presented with Halifax Public Libraries\, these concerts run from fall to spring at the Halifax Central Library. Each program is thoughtfully curated and features low lighting\, noise-reduction headphones\, open spaces to move and dance\, a quiet room\, and a relaxed atmosphere where attendees are free to move and vocalize. Certified Music Therapist Anna Plaskett along with a team of Music Therapists and movement facilitators from Phin Performing Arts are present to support families in relaxing and enjoying the music together. \nSensory-Accessible Concerts is a free\, monthly series offering a safe\, inclusive\, and welcoming space for everyone to enjoy chamber music. Designed with consideration for autistic\, neurodivergent\, and intellectually disabled community members and their families\, as well as seniors experiencing age-related hearing and vision changes\, the series welcomes anyone who may find traditional concert environments challenging\, yet all are invited to attend! \nThe Sensory-Accessible Concerts series is made possible through the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts\, the J&W Murphy Foundation\, the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia\, the Harrison McCain Foundation\, the Craig Foundation\, the Cecilia Concerts Season Sponsor Nice Moves / Red Door Realty\, and our presenting partner the Halifax Public Libraries. SUMMARY:Illyess Ferfera Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Franco-Algerian saxophonist Illyes Ferfera leads his vibrant quartet in a bold and uplifting exploration of global jazz. Drawing from his North African roots\, Ferfera blends the rhythmic drive of Algerian Diwane and Moroccan Gnawa with the spontaneity of American jazz\, the pulse of Latin grooves\, and the nuance of French musical traditions. The result is a richly layered sound that honours cultural roots while pushing creative boundaries. \nFerfera’s expressive saxophone lines move fluidly between tradition and innovation carried by a dynamic ensemble that brings depth\, colour\, and vitality to every performance. With remarkable chemistry and a shared commitment to musical storytelling\, the quartet crafts expansive soundscapes that speak to both the intellect and the soul. Their music is a celebration of movement and connection\, alive with rhythm\, improvisation\, and cross-cultural resonance. \nThey perform original compositions from their latest album “Tawazun\,” which means “balance” in Arabic. The work reflects their pursuit of musical harmony and intercultural dialogue. This is a free concert\, open to all with advance registration. Co presented with Alliance Française Halifax and the Halifax Public Libraries. \nSeason Sponsor: Nice Moves\, Red Door Realty.
