SUMMARY:Garrett Mason
DESCRIPTION:Garrett Mason is a true bluesman at heart. He was raised in Truro\, Nova Scotia by his mother Pam\, and father\, veteran Canadian Bluesman Dutch Mason. His quest to become a blues musician started at a very early age; being surrounded by music blues music\, Garrett’s favorite tapes at 3 years old were Canned Heat and Buddy Rich. What really sealed the deal for Garrett to become a blues guitarist came after watching a video of Stevie Ray Vaughn “Live At the El Mocambo” – he was hooked. \nHis dad\, Dutch Mason\, stopped playing guitar before Garrett was born due to crippling arthritis in his hands. Although he was not able to teach his son to play\, he has certainly been able to teach Garrett the structure of the Blues and to influence him about the resulting sound. Surrounded by his father’s peers\, Garrett has had the benefit of hearing and learning from a wide variety of musical talent. The late Rick Jeffery was a great inspiration to Garrett; they would talk and play for hours together. Rick once said “Garrett is the only guitar player I know that can play Albert Collins’ style down to a T”. The combination of his father’s advice\, Jeffery’s guidance and his own natural talents provide that special brew for Garrett to become the musical influence he is destined to be. \nGarrett would be the first to tell you that riding the coat tails of others won’t take you very far in this business\, but striving to be truly original is the secret to longevity and lasting success. Garrett launched his debut CD I’m Just a Man at the 2004 Harvest Jazz and Blues festival in Fredericton\, New Brunswick to a sold out crowd. \nThis debut CD features Garrett’s talent for strong original songs\, a voice that is reminiscent of a veteran performer and his extraordinary aptitude for playing electric guitar. Garrett’s original talent was awarded in 2005 when he received a Juno for Best Blues Album. Garrett Mason is poised to be one of the brightest stars to emerge from the East Coast Blues scene in years. \nGarrett’s band released their sophomore album Love and Sound in July 2008 which was nominated for a Juno Award. The album won Blues Artist/Group Recording of the Year at the 2009 Music Nova Scotia and Industry Awards.

SUMMARY:Dave Staples Trio
DESCRIPTION:John Chaisson grew up in Antigonish\, and studied jazz at St. Francis Xavier University\, long before the singing jazz upright bass player Esperanza Spaulding came to prominence. Fans of John’s smooth baritone-plus-bass already had her Nova Scotia counterpoint. \nJohn has put true\, low notes behind PEI legend Lenny Gallant\, the stratospheric pipes of The Rankins\, and beneath the fretless lilt of Natalie McMaster’s fiddle. For Natalie\, John has been a music director\, that is to say\, her band-leader and arranger\, the person who runs rehearsals. \nNow based in Halifax\, John’s trio plays for special events and regularly at Baton Rouge and many other venues across Nova Scotia; John and trio also provided expert framing for young phenoms like saxophonist Rob Crowell. \nJohn admits that inspiration is a deep well – for him it starts with music in the house\, played and encouraged by his parents\, then with the arrival of a lead-singing bass player\, Paul McCartney. John also mentions McCartney’s apparent opposite in ’60s music – the iconoclast composer\, singer and bassist Charles Mingus\, himself known for heart-rending chord changes\, like those in Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. \nJohn’s signature instrument is an unusual solid-body upright bass\, nothing McCartney or Mingus could have had\, in the day. This bass sounds sweet\, and repels the Maritimes’ dry and damp spells with warmth. \nDave Staples is a veteran East Coast performer and music educator and maintains a busy freelance career as a pianist\, trombonist\, composer and recording artist. Dave has performed and recorded with such artists and groups as Mike Murley\, Rene e Rosnes\, Kenny Wheeler\, Kurt Elling\, Omar Hakim\, the Maritime Jazz Orchestra and Bicoastal Collective as well as numerous East Coast musicians and ensembles\, including John Chiasson\, Ian Janes\, Scott and the Rocks\, Mike Cowie\, Latin Groove\, the Blakey Project\, the Mingus Project\, the Horace Silver Tribute Band\, the Halifax Trombone Summit\, the Back Alley Big Band and his own Dave Staples Septet. In 1995\, he received the East Coast Music Award (ECMA) with Jeff Goodspeed as Jazz Artists of the Year for their album release of “Eastern Passage”(CBC Productions) and is featured on the 2006 ECMA Jazz Album of the Year “Tom Roach: Piano Trios “(CBC Productions). \nDave taught instrumental music with the Halifax Regional School Board for over 30 years and is co-founder and director of the Nova Scotia Honour Jazz program\, which has worked with talented students of jazz in Nova Scotia for the last 25 years. He has also served as a board member of JazzEast and was on the Canadian Executive Board of the International Association for Jazz Education as Newsletter Editor and Director of Communications from 2003 to 2008. \nCharlie Cooley has performed and/or recorded with such artists as: Leonard Cohen\, K.D. Lang\, The Guess Who\, Heillig Manoeuvre\, Amanda Marshall\, Anne Murray\, Randy Brecker\, Kellylee Evans\, Sass Jordan\, Long John Baldry\, Matt Dusk\, and The Blues Brothers (musical director – Paul Shaffer) \nCharlie is also a member of the Juno Award winning world beat jazz ensemble Manteca. Manteca has performed in many territories around the world including The North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands (Holland)\, The Canadian Pavilion at Expo in Seville\, Spain\, The Aspen Jazz Festival\, The Playboy Jazz Festival at The Hollywood Bowl and The Pori Jazz Festival in Finland. \nCharlie has been the in-house drummer for many of Canada’s prime time television award shows such as The Juno Awards\, The Canadian Songwriters Hall Of Fame Awards\, The East Coast Music Awards\, The Gemini Awards\, The Canadian Country Music Awards\, and the Canada Day Celebrations from Parliament Hill (CBC)

SUMMARY:Identity: A Song Cycle
DESCRIPTION:The Toronto world premiere of the song cycle IDENTITY was described by soprano Measha Brueggergosman-Lee as ‘a truly astonishing happening; a feast for the eyes and ears.’ In early June 2020\, during the Black Lives Matter movement\, Torontonian baritone Elliot Madore opened up on social media about his struggles with unabashedly expressing his identity as a biracial person. Director Joel Ivany and Madore came together to find a way to present to the Canadian arts community the universal themes behind Madore’s moving Instagram post. To give voice to these complex questions of multicultural identity\, they turned to JUNO Award-winning composer Dinuk Wijeratne – whose genre-defying fusion of global musical traditions has established him as Canada’s leading voice in cross-cultural composition. Wijeratne’s globally-infused score seamlessly blends Western classical music with an array of musical traditions\, including those from South Asia and the Middle East\, as well as modern Pop and Jazz idioms – creating a musical language as multifaceted as the identities it explores. With poetry by acclaimed African Nova Scotian artist Shauntay Grant\, whose powerful verses navigate the intricacies of ‘self’\, the work features performances by GRAMMY Award-winning baritone Elliot Madore\, bassist Tyler Emond\, percussionist Nick Halley\, and Wijeratne himself on piano. IDENTITY pioneers a new soundscape for multicultural storytelling—exploring how we choose to define ourselves. We acknowledge the support of Arts Nova Scotia and Atlantic Lottery. Season Sponsor: Nice Moves / Red Door Realty. \nArtists: Elliot Madore\, baritone; Nick Halley\, percussion; Tyler Emond\, double bass; Dinuk Wijeratne\, piano \nTickets $30-$42

SUMMARY:Stories Behind the Music
DESCRIPTION: Transition to Modern Times (Listening Session)\nThere is a human life behind every piece of art. \nStories Behind the Music is a curated listening and concert series I created to explore classical music as a living story—shaped by real people\, their friendships\, struggles\, and the world they lived in. \n100 Years of Stories\nOn March 29th\, we gather to explore the Transition to Modern Times. \nI will share stories that cover the entire journey of the 20th century—from the late 19th century all the way to the year 2000. We will talk about how history changed and how composers found new ways to express their world. \nA Mysterious Masterpiece\nBecause the music of this era is so powerful and deep\, we will dedicate our entire listening time to one single\, monumental composition from a curated recording. \nThis “hidden gem” was written in 1999\, at the very end of the century. It is a profound bridge between the old world and the new. I am keeping the title a surprise for now\, but we will experience this massive work together in the quiet of the sanctuary. \nYour Guide to Modern Times\nAs with our previous sessions\, I am preparing a personal guide for you to take home. This guide isn’t just about one piece; it covers the entire transitional period. It includes my personal recommendations for: \n\nEssential modern classical music\nMovies that capture the spirit of the era\nBooks to help you dive deeper into the history\n\nWhat to Expect\n\nA Century in Stories: A brief history of music from the late 1800s to the turn of the millennium.\nThe “1999” Mystery: A deep-dive listening session of one major work that defines the end of the century.\nA Take-Home Guide: My curated list of music\, films\, and books to help you explore this era on your own.\nSocial Connection: Stay after the session for light refreshments\, snacks\, and conversation.\n\nEvent Details\n\nWhen: Sunday\, March 29th | 2:00 PM\nWhere: Hillside United Church (Sanctuary)\nAdmission: Free (Registration requested)\n\nSave the Date: Join us for our series finale: a live Piano Trio concert on April 19th at 2:00 PM\, featuring music by Dvořák\, Rachmaninoff\, Debussy\, Piazzolla\, and more! \nWith Gratitude\nThis project would not be possible without the ongoing support of the United Church of Canada Foundation and the Hillside United Church team. Thank you for providing the space and care to make this happen. \nSpecial thanks to the Royal Bank of Canada for their generous donation\, which keeps this program free and accessible to everyone. \nPlease reserve your spot so we can plan refreshments and seating accordingly.
