SUMMARY:Rankin's Winter Warmers
DESCRIPTION:Winter is long\, but it doesn’t have to feel that way…  \nRankin MacInnis is a Maritime musician with a unique kind of show. \nSaturday afternoons in Halifax have become synonymous with “Rankin’s Winter Warmers” at The Marquee. \n\nFrom January to March\, MacInnis makes the trip from Mabou\, Cape Breton\, to Halifax to host what has become one the most popular events in the city. \n“Speaking of Cape Breton\, the concept\, I think\, kind of developed in the way I would have been developed in Mabou\, with kitchen parties and the sharing of music\,” he says. \nMacInnis always wears a hockey jersey during his performances and does everything from singing to playing the bagpipes. \nHe not only takes the stage with his eight-piece band\, but is joined each week by special guests. \n“Jimmy Rankin has been on the stage\, Carmen Townsand\, (The) Town Heroes\,” MacInnis says. \nThe shows welcome people of all ages. \n“The older we get\, the more perfect it is\,” jokes MacInnis. \n“Rankin’s Winter Warmers” has become so popular it won best event at the 2023 Music Nova Scotia Awards and MacInnis took home the prize for Entertainer of the Year as well. \n“It was a big moment\,” he says. \nFor those who haven’t experienced the concert series yet\, MacInnis says there is still time\, with three weeks and four shows left. \nMacInnis adds the shows are “for everyone.” \n“Mostly upbeat\, all fun music\, but we do our best to celebrate all genres\,” he says. “So even if you only like a certain amount\, it’s like the same as like the weather in Scotland\, just wait five minutes and you’ll get something different.” — CTV \nTickets $28.50

SUMMARY:Valentine's Jazz Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of live jazz on the 3rd floor at the Lower Deck\, featuring the Patrick Simms Trio. Enjoy a relaxed\, intimate atmosphere with smooth jazz performances setting the tone for the night. \nHailing from Cole Harbour\, Nova Scotia\, Patrick studied classical music at Dalhousie University. Not content to only sing opera arias\, Patrick is also well versed in the styles of old school jazz crooning\, folk music with small and large bands and orchestras\, as well as the heavier blues and soul music that he performs with his band The Brickworks\, whether it’s a performance at Bearly’s House of Blues or the Halifax Jazz Fest. \nWhen he’s not singing at restaurants\, clubs\, or private events\, Patrick is gainfully employed as a car salesman\, but without the grease and the pressure. He has used this job as a fun excuse to conceptualize and direct a series of musical automobile advertisements\, stretching his Don-Draper-wannabe advertising muscles. \nPatrick’s first and foremost love is music\, and is able to provide tailored music for private events\, from classical\, jazz\, blues\, folk\, funk\, and just about everything in between. \nAs for collaborators\, Patrick performs with many musicians around HRM\, but the core group includes such wonderfully talented players as Kenneth Pasher\, Dilshan Weerasinghe\, Nick Donovan\, Josh Awe\, Brendan Melchin\, Lukas Pearse\, Kyle Tully\, John Janigan-Mills\, Paul st Amand\, Andrew MacKelvie\, Ally Fiola\, Ali Enriquez. On the classical side of things Patrick often sings with soprano extraordinaire Brittany Cann\, and pianists Tara Scott\, Greg Myra\, Lynette Wahlstrom just to name a few.

SUMMARY:Ariana Nasr & Curtis Thorpe
DESCRIPTION:Ariana is a versatile singer and multi-instrumentalist\, dedicated to sharing her love of music through live performance. With a voice that transports listeners to another era\, she has been delighting audiences for many years with her diverse musical offerings\, spanning many styles and languages. \nAriana’s musical journey began in early childhood\, encouraged by her mother\, a music teacher and her family’s love of music. She studied various instruments\, including violin\, saxophone\, clarinet\, and piano\, and performed in multiple wind ensembles and jazz bands in her native Nova Scotia. After high school\, she discovered her passion for singing and became an independent artist\, performing and writing music with her then-partner Andy Flinn for over a decade. During this period Ariana produced eleven CDs and contributed to numerous recordings for other artists. \nHer musical path took a new turn when she fell in love with French chanson\, leading her to create a tribute show to the legendary Édith Piaf in 2015. The show\, which paid homage to Piaf’s legacy and the classic concert style of the 1900s\, captured the interest of her Canadian public and enjoyed many performances around the country. Ariana then expanded the show to include the works of Jacques Brel\, adopting the dress codes and personas of both artists to create an immersive experience. \nIn 2016 Ariana and her sisters Sahara and Kamila Nasr and brother-in-law Ken Shorley\, founded the ASHK ensemble. This family project showcases the poetic works of their late father Amin Nasr\, a Sufi poet from Afghanistan\, and the group’s unique musical fusion which reflects their diverse cultural background and influences. \n2016 also saw the formation of her duo with Curtis Thorpe\, a project fueled by a love of improvisation\, of musical arrangement and multi-instrumentalism; Curtis plays guitar\, percussion and harmonica simultaneously while Ariana sings and takes liberties with her soprano saxophone and sometimes accordion or violin. The duo delights in making new arrangements of French\, international\, and jazz songs. \nIn 2023\, Ariana made her solo debut at the Carrefour Mondial de l’Accordéon in Montmagny\, Quebec\, performing her interpretations of classic popular songs from around the world\, accompanying herself on chromatic button accordion. \nAriana has been based in Montréal since 2017 and continues to tour as a solo artist\, in duo with Curtis Thorpe\, and as a member of ASHK ensemble.

SUMMARY:Garrett Mason
DESCRIPTION:Garrett Mason is a true bluesman at heart. He was raised in Truro\, Nova Scotia by his mother Pam\, and father\, veteran Canadian Bluesman Dutch Mason. His quest to become a blues musician started at a very early age; being surrounded by music blues music\, Garrett’s favorite tapes at 3 years old were Canned Heat and Buddy Rich. What really sealed the deal for Garrett to become a blues guitarist came after watching a video of Stevie Ray Vaughn “Live At the El Mocambo” – he was hooked. \nHis dad\, Dutch Mason\, stopped playing guitar before Garrett was born due to crippling arthritis in his hands. Although he was not able to teach his son to play\, he has certainly been able to teach Garrett the structure of the Blues and to influence him about the resulting sound. Surrounded by his father’s peers\, Garrett has had the benefit of hearing and learning from a wide variety of musical talent. The late Rick Jeffery was a great inspiration to Garrett; they would talk and play for hours together. Rick once said “Garrett is the only guitar player I know that can play Albert Collins’ style down to a T”. The combination of his father’s advice\, Jeffery’s guidance and his own natural talents provide that special brew for Garrett to become the musical influence he is destined to be. \nGarrett would be the first to tell you that riding the coat tails of others won’t take you very far in this business\, but striving to be truly original is the secret to longevity and lasting success. Garrett launched his debut CD I’m Just a Man at the 2004 Harvest Jazz and Blues festival in Fredericton\, New Brunswick to a sold out crowd. \nThis debut CD features Garrett’s talent for strong original songs\, a voice that is reminiscent of a veteran performer and his extraordinary aptitude for playing electric guitar.

SUMMARY:Ty Messick & Friends
DESCRIPTION:One of our most under-rated songwriters and performers\, Ty Messick\, with friends including Pictou County singing legend Virgil Muir\, will return to The Carleton for their first show of 2026 on Saturday\, January 24th. Show time is 8 PM and tickets are only $10 + HST. \nTheir sets will include Ty’s original music from his album releases as well as covering some wicked tunes. We’ll have standing room for this show\, so to secure a seat\, get there early! \nTy Messsick was born in Philadelphia\, P.A  in 1979\, soaked up a lifetime of Philly K-Rock and campus WXPN radio and then moved to St. Margaret’s Bay\, Nova Scotia\, at 13 years old. At 19\, Tyler encountered Joel Plaskett playing Down at the Khyber in Hell’s Kitchen and was given a roadmap to East Coast rock ‘n roll. Tyler is also known by his stage name\, Museum Pieces. \nHis original songwriting became public knowledge in 2003\, when his first album\, Grain Sales of 1840was nominated for an ECMA. He has since released 6 full length albums including: Philadelphia (2005)\, Plain Sight (2018) and Sun’s Gonna Rise (2023). \nHis sound is a mix of Rock and Traditional – and his recordings often draw comparisons to other Philadelphia-born bands Kurt Vile\, and War on Drugs. Messick spent many years collaborating with notable Island and Scotian acts such as Al Tuck\, Joel Plaskett\, Matt Mays\, Jill Barber\, Rose Cousins… and the list goes on. More recently Messick has toured with the Big Turnips artists roster\, and worked with Absolute Losers\, Two Hours Traffic\, and Gizmo – the new PEI pop rock bands. \n“Tyler’s songs make rain slow down a little bit and flowers blossom a little harder. Every song makes me sigh and high with relief. Hands down my favourite band.” Matt Mays \n“This band tends to have a way with melody that most people work so very hard to acquire.” – Chris Wibbs for Exclaim! Magazine \n“stately folk pop” – Magnet Magazine \n“Tyler Messick fills the number with boundless soul\, as if it’s the culmination of an epic\, troubled love story. There’s enough heart here to represent a young man’s whole lifetime\, the better and the worse\, and enough guitar\, too. He sounds as if he grew up with these chords\, just waiting for the chance. And he kills it.”  – Sean Michaels\, Said the Gramaphone From the Globe and Mail \nTyler Messick “Grain Sales of 1840 (expanded version) 2002 on Spotify \nMuseum Pieces “Philadelphia” album on Spotify \nMuseum Pieces “Plain Sight” on Spotify \nTyler Messick “Suns Gonna Rise” album 2023 \nTickets

SUMMARY:Stories Behind the Music: Live Edition
DESCRIPTION:There is a human life behind every piece of art. \nStories Behind the Music is a curated listening and concert series created by cellist and educator Anna Shabalina. The project explores classical music not only as sound\, but as a living story — shaped by real people\, their friendships\, struggles\, and the world they lived in. \nThis year\, we began with the Classical era. In January\, we gathered for a listening session centered around Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Quartet\, exploring the music and stories of this period together. Now\, in February\, we continue with the Classical era — this time through music for strings\, performed live. \nThis concert is presented as part of Soul Strings Ensemble — Anna Shabalina’s chamber music project. \nSoul Strings Ensemble is a flexible chamber ensemble that brings together local and international musicians for themed programs. The ensemble changes with each project\, shaped by the repertoire and the collaborators chosen for it. \nFor this Classical-era program\, Soul Strings Ensemble appears as a string trio. \n✨ Performers \nAnna Shabalina — cello & stories \nInna Klymenko — violin \nVladyslav Martsyniv — viola \nMusic by Mozart\, Schubert\, Boccherini and Hummel. \n🎼 What to expect \n– A live string trio concert in the sanctuary of the church \n– Short\, informal stories about the music and composers\, woven into the program \n– Guidance on what to notice in Classical-era music\, and why this music still speaks to us today \n– A relaxed social time after the concert to talk and connect \n– Light refreshments and snacks \n  \nThis is not a formal lecture — and not a traditional concert either — but something in between: \na thoughtful and social way to experience classical music. \n🎟️ Admission is free. \nNo prior musical knowledge is required. \nWith gratitude \nThis project would not be possible without the ongoing support of the United Church of Canada Foundation and the Hillside United Church team. Thank you for generously providing the space\, volunteers\, refreshments\, and — most importantly — your time\, care\, and energy. \nSpecial thanks as well to RBC for their generous donation\, which allows this program to remain free and accessible to the audience. \n  \nPlease\, reserve your spot here\, so we know how many people to expect: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ca/e/1982537712667?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:The Burning Hell
DESCRIPTION:The Burning Hell is the ongoing musical project of songwriter Mathias Kom and multi-instrumentalist Ariel Sharratt\, often including additional collaborators. Their narrative-driven songs are packed with an abundance of literary\, historical\, and pop-cultural subjects\, incorporating a frequent fixation on apocalypse and ruin into work that celebrates participation in a mutually created\, ever surprising\, and even occasionally beautiful world. \nBased in the woods of rural Prince Edward Island\, The Burning Hell emphasizes presence and connection\, affirming a commitment to the political power of sharing music. ‘Ghost Palace\,’ their newest album\, was released on March 7\, 2025 on You’ve Changed Records in North America and BB*Island everywhere else. \nWhen Mathias and Ariel aren’t on the road or in the studio with the band\, they pursue art projects at the intersection of ecology and sound with their collective Idlefield Art Lab. Recent ventures have included mobile\, solar-powered recording studios in Scotland and Canada\, and off-grid recording projects in abandoned farms and lighthouses. \n  \nTickets
