SUMMARY:Quatuor Cobalt
DESCRIPTION:Reflections of Time\nQuatuor Cobalt presents a program that bridges musical eras with vibrant originality. This spirited Canadian ensemble\, praised for its bold creativity and refined sound\, showcases works by trailblazing women composers\, each piece enriched with distinct depth and character. Maddalena Laura Lombardini Sirmen’s “Quartet No. 2 in B-flat Major” reveals her classical poise and 18th-century virtuosity. Alicia Terzian’s “Tres Piezas” conjures a vivid emotional landscape shaped by her Argentine and Armenian heritage. Pulitzer Prize and GRAMMY-winning Caroline Shaw’s “Plan & Elevation” and “Entr’acte” dazzle with inventive structures and lyrical warmth. Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn’s “String Quartet in E-flat Major” brims with Romantic expressiveness\, its harmonies and contrasts revealing her undercelebrated genius. Hailed by France Musique as “a revelation\,” Quatuor Cobalt has earned acclaim across Canada with performances at Place des Arts\, Palais Montcalm\, Salle Bourgie\, and Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur\, along with appearances at leading festivals including Domaine Forget\, Lanaudière\, and Music & Beyond. Winners of the Tremplin Competition in Paris\, they bring fresh energy and insight to every performance\, illuminating the enduring impact of women’s creativity in classical music. Season Sponsor: Nice Moves / Red Door Realty. \nThis performance is made possible with the generous support of Laura Jantek.

SUMMARY:Pierre Bensusan
DESCRIPTION:French-Algerian acoustic guitar virtuoso\, vocalist and composer Pierre Bensusan\, surnamed “Mister DADGAD”\, has taken his unique sound to all corners of the globe. \nWinner of the Independent Music Award for his triple live album Encore\, voted Best World Music Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine reader’s Poll\, winner of the Rose d’Or at the Montreux Festival for his debut album\, Pierre is recognized as one of the greatest guitar players of the 21st century. \nWhen Michael Hedges titles one of his compositions Bensusan\, you know that the inspiration behind it must be special and Pierre Bensusan certainly is. Guitarists from Leo Kottke to Larry Corryel\, to Tuck Andress\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Mark Knopfler\, Andrew York\, Andy Timmons\, to Steve Lukather… have sung his praises\, and Steve Vai released three Bensusan albums on his label Favored Nations. And it’s not just guitarists who are so inspired by Pierre’s music\, as a recent studio collaboration with him on Donny Osmond’s latest album Start Again goes to show. \nIf World Music means the fusion of traditional\, contemporary\, jazz\, classical and pop music\, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. A pianist in his beginnings then self-taught on the guitar\, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument. \nVIDEO \nTickets

SUMMARY:Garrett Mason
DESCRIPTION:Garrett Mason is a true bluesman at heart. He was raised in Truro\, Nova Scotia by his mother Pam\, and father\, veteran Canadian Bluesman Dutch Mason. His quest to become a blues musician started at a very early age; being surrounded by music blues music\, Garrett’s favorite tapes at 3 years old were Canned Heat and Buddy Rich. What really sealed the deal for Garrett to become a blues guitarist came after watching a video of Stevie Ray Vaughn “Live At the El Mocambo” – he was hooked. \nHis dad\, Dutch Mason\, stopped playing guitar before Garrett was born due to crippling arthritis in his hands. Although he was not able to teach his son to play\, he has certainly been able to teach Garrett the structure of the Blues and to influence him about the resulting sound. Surrounded by his father’s peers\, Garrett has had the benefit of hearing and learning from a wide variety of musical talent. The late Rick Jeffery was a great inspiration to Garrett; they would talk and play for hours together. Rick once said “Garrett is the only guitar player I know that can play Albert Collins’ style down to a T”. The combination of his father’s advice\, Jeffery’s guidance and his own natural talents provide that special brew for Garrett to become the musical influence he is destined to be. \nGarrett would be the first to tell you that riding the coat tails of others won’t take you very far in this business\, but striving to be truly original is the secret to longevity and lasting success. Garrett launched his debut CD I’m Just a Man at the 2004 Harvest Jazz and Blues festival in Fredericton\, New Brunswick to a sold out crowd. \nThis debut CD features Garrett’s talent for strong original songs\, a voice that is reminiscent of a veteran performer and his extraordinary aptitude for playing electric guitar. Garrett’s original talent was awarded in 2005 when he received a Juno for Best Blues Album. Garrett Mason is poised to be one of the brightest stars to emerge from the East Coast Blues scene in years. \nGarrett’s band released their sophomore album Love and Sound in July 2008 which was nominated for a Juno Award. The album won Blues Artist/Group Recording of the Year at the 2009 Music Nova Scotia and Industry Awards.

SUMMARY:Sam Wilson & Roddy Ellias
DESCRIPTION:Sam Wilson is a guitarist-composer whose practice focuses on creating instrumental music for improvisers. Her current artistic muse is wild spaces and site-specific responses\, evident by her latest release Wintertides (April 2024)\, featuring drummer Jen Yakamovich and bassist Geordie Hart. Written in the winter of 2022 on both the east (Scotsburn\, NS) and west Coast (at Lena Residency\, Galiano Island BC); it’s inspired by contrasting landscapes and the collaboration of bi-coastal communities. Her albums Into a Heart Pt. II and New Doors(Jackson/Wilson Duo) won Music Nova Scotia’s “Jazz Recording of the Year” in 2022 and 2023\, respectively. All of her releases have been nominated for the East Coast Music Awards. In 2021 Sam won the Paul Cram Creation award and composed her first piece for orchestra\, ‘Recover-we’\, which was performed by Symphony Nova Scotia at the 2023 Open Waters Festival. \nSam was raised in Ontario but has made Nova Scotia her home for more than a decade; she currently resides in Halifax. She performs regularly with her collaborator Andrew Jackson in their duo project (Jackson\Wilson Duo)\, as well with her trio that features a rotation of musicians including Caito Macdonald\, Kyle Tully\, Gabriella Ciurcovich\, Jen Yakamovich and Geordie Hart. She has worked with Phillip Greenlief (Elephant Heart)\, Andrew Mackelvie\, Ellen Gibling\, Matt Gallant (Borrowers)\, Nicholas D’amato\, Nicola Miller\, Music Declares Emergency\, Votive Dance\, Upstream Music Association\, among others and supported artists such as Laura Roy and Kaia Kater. She is an alumni of St.FX University and the Creative Music Workshop. \n\nReviewers have described Roddy Ellias as “genius (Bud Freeman)\, “positively brilliant” (Bill McBirnie) and “exquisite …the kind of subtlety you don’t often hear…anywhere.”(Mark Miller).[1] He has performed with Lee Konitz\, Kenny Wheeler\, Tom Harrel\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Nat Adderley\, Slide Hampton\, Cleo Laine\, Pepper Adams\, Lew Tabakin\, Michel Donato\, Mel Tormé\, Bud Freeman\, PJ Perry\, Rob McConnell\, the Montreal Symphony\, the National Arts Centre Orchestra\, and Michel Legrand. As an improviser\, “Canadian guitarist and writer Matthew Warnock describes him this way: “as close to being a Zen master on the guitar as he can be.”[2] \nThe Ottawa Citizen reviewed a “concert by pianist Marc Copland\, guitarist Roddy Ellias and bassist Adrian Vedady”\, calling it “deeply lyrical and personal original music.” \n“Ellias has had two concert series at Paradiso with local and imported musicians including an organ quartet with Kirk MacDonald\, a Fourth Stage showcase of his own jazz compositions\, an Ottawa Jazz Festival concert with Jeri Brown\, several festival workshop and Composers’ Collective concerts\, as well as appearances with John Geggie\, Anna Williams\, Tena Palmer\, Garry Elliott\, Petr Cancura\, and many others. And his classical compositions were featured at this year’s Music and Beyond festival.”[3]
