SUMMARY:Stories Behind the Music
DESCRIPTION: Transition to Modern Times (Listening Session)\nThere is a human life behind every piece of art. \nStories Behind the Music is a curated listening and concert series I created to explore classical music as a living story—shaped by real people\, their friendships\, struggles\, and the world they lived in. \n100 Years of Stories\nOn March 29th\, we gather to explore the Transition to Modern Times. \nI will share stories that cover the entire journey of the 20th century—from the late 19th century all the way to the year 2000. We will talk about how history changed and how composers found new ways to express their world. \nA Mysterious Masterpiece\nBecause the music of this era is so powerful and deep\, we will dedicate our entire listening time to one single\, monumental composition from a curated recording. \nThis “hidden gem” was written in 1999\, at the very end of the century. It is a profound bridge between the old world and the new. I am keeping the title a surprise for now\, but we will experience this massive work together in the quiet of the sanctuary. \nYour Guide to Modern Times\nAs with our previous sessions\, I am preparing a personal guide for you to take home. This guide isn’t just about one piece; it covers the entire transitional period. It includes my personal recommendations for: \n\nEssential modern classical music\nMovies that capture the spirit of the era\nBooks to help you dive deeper into the history\n\nWhat to Expect\n\nA Century in Stories: A brief history of music from the late 1800s to the turn of the millennium.\nThe “1999” Mystery: A deep-dive listening session of one major work that defines the end of the century.\nA Take-Home Guide: My curated list of music\, films\, and books to help you explore this era on your own.\nSocial Connection: Stay after the session for light refreshments\, snacks\, and conversation.\n\nEvent Details\n\nWhen: Sunday\, March 29th | 2:00 PM\nWhere: Hillside United Church (Sanctuary)\nAdmission: Free (Registration requested)\n\nSave the Date: Join us for our series finale: a live Piano Trio concert on April 19th at 2:00 PM\, featuring music by Dvořák\, Rachmaninoff\, Debussy\, Piazzolla\, and more! \nWith Gratitude\nThis project would not be possible without the ongoing support of the United Church of Canada Foundation and the Hillside United Church team. Thank you for providing the space and care to make this happen. \nSpecial thanks to the Royal Bank of Canada for their generous donation\, which keeps this program free and accessible to everyone. \nPlease reserve your spot so we can plan refreshments and seating accordingly.

SUMMARY:Dal Chorus and Dal Wind Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Music Under the Big Top\nAll expressions of audience appreciation are welcome. \nRelaxed Performances are designed to be open\, flexible\, comfortable and judgement-free spaces for all. Movement and joyful noise are encouraged! We especially welcome families with young children\, neurodivergent guests\, and seniors experiencing hearing or vision changes. The music stays thrilling and high-quality\, while the environment is adapted to support ease and access. \nHere\, you’ll find ASL interpreters\, adjusted lighting\, flexible seating\, and dedicated chill-out spaces. Noise-reducing headphones will be available—but those with sensitive ears be aware: the Wind Ensemble will still bring plenty of lively\, circus-sized sound! \nKey features of this concert will include: \n\nWelcoming Atmosphere: A judgment-free zone where typical strict concert etiquette (like staying silent or sitting still) does not apply.\n\n\nFreedom of Movement: Audience members can enter/leave the hall freely\, move around\, and vocalize during the performance.\n\n\nSensory Adjustments: House lights will be kept dimmed rather than turned off\, and noise-dampening headphones will be available to reduce sound intensity. Please help keep our performance space scent free.\n\n\nSupportive Amenities: Availability of ASL interpretation and quiet rooms for breaks.\n\nBreaking Circus Collective is a collection of contemporary circus artists working out of Kjipuktuk (Halifax\, NS). Breaking Circus sets and breaks their own rules in order to create\, explore and engage with the full spectrum of our human experience. The company reaches into the unknown and finds new ways to weave stories through cross-discipline experiments and integration of technology. \nTickets
