Event Series: Cecilia Concerts

katingaKatigennik

Wednesday May 13 @ 7:30 pm
Inuit Connections

Join us for a moving concert of classical vocal music sung in both Inuttitut and English, led by JUNO Award-winning Inuk soprano and Member of the Order of Canada, Dr. Deantha Edmunds.

She is joined by her 15-year-old daughter, emerging artist Annabelle Edmunds-Ramsay, whose vocal poise and maturity bring a special dimension to the program, and by ECMA-winning recording artist and collaborative pianist Jennifer King.

The program centres Indigenous presence, cultural continuity, and connection across generations, in an evening shaped by family, language, and shared listening.

The repertoire brings together original songs from Edmunds’ award-winning album “Connections,” alongside sacred selections from “Pillorikput Inuit: Inuktitut Arias for All Seasons,” including

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s graceful “ Opinak ikkiliojutit (Ave verum corpus),”
  • Johann Abraham Peter Schulz’s uplifting “Nutarâsuk Immanuel,”
  • George Frideric Handel’s stirring “Kuvianattuksovut itigangit (How Beautiful Are The Feet),”
  • Carl Wilhelm Fliegel’s devotional “Saimartigut Jêsuse!”

You will also hear

Sid Dicker’s “Labradorimiut / Sons of Labrador,” in an arrangement by Leslee Heys. A brief throat-singing demonstration adds another layer of artistry and insight, offering a closer look at a vital form of expression during an evening shaped by reclamation, celebration, and continuity.

At the heart of the concert is the rare and powerful experience of an Inuk mother and daughter performing together in Inuttitut, creating moments of closeness, memory, and shared cultural expression.

Co-presented with the Halifax Public Libraries. Season Sponsor: Nice Moves / Red Door Realty.
